What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how a widespread disturbance changes physical conditions, populations, food webs, and habitats over time. They compare sudden events with gradual changes and predict how ecosystems may recover.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given graphs, maps, or observations, students explain a clear chain of causes and effects. They distinguish immediate damage from long-term population changes and support predictions with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think added nutrients always help ecosystems, missing how decomposition lowers oxygen after an algal bloom. They may confuse climate with weather or assume every fire, flood, or storm causes permanent destruction.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Fertilizer enters a lake and algae rapidly increase. Draw and label the next three changes involving oxygen, fish, and decomposers.
