What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect weather conditions such as rain, heat, wind, drought, and floods to changes in habitats and living things. They explain these changes with clear cause-and-effect chains.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can predict how a weather event will affect plants, animals, soil, and water in an ecosystem. They support each prediction with evidence about organisms' needs and habitat conditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think extreme weather affects every organism in the same way or always causes permanent damage. They may also overlook how regular rain, wind, and temperature changes shape ecosystems over time.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A meadow receives regular spring rain, then a two-day flood. Name one ecosystem effect of each and explain the flood with a two-step cause-and-effect chain.

Use trays of soil, grass, and water to model heavy rain, then record erosion, pooling, and plant damage.
