What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify changes in living populations and nonliving conditions such as water, light, temperature, and soil. They trace how one change affects organisms, food webs, and habitats.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can classify a changed factor and predict several connected effects within an ecosystem. They support each prediction with evidence or a clear cause-and-effect chain.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call dead leaves abiotic, even though they came from living organisms. They often predict only direct effects or assume every population changes in the same direction.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “A pond receives less sunlight after trees grow along its bank. Classify the changed factor, then predict effects on algae and fish.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up identical duckweed cups under different light levels, then count leaves over one week and graph the results.

  2. Write how a drought could affect grass, rabbits, and hawks, using a three-step cause-and-effect chain.

  3. Teams draw factor cards and race to build accurate chains showing effects on three parts of a food web.

  4. Compare local stream photos and species counts before and after construction, then identify likely causes of the changes.
