What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how fires, floods, disease, and erosion change habitats and living things. They explain cause and effect, including damage, movement, death, and recovery.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a photo or short event description, students name ecosystem changes and explain why they happened. They predict a likely effect on plants or animals.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every disturbance destroys an ecosystem forever or affects only animals. They may also confuse erosion with flooding or think disease affects only humans.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a flooded forest. Ask students to name one habitat change and explain one likely effect on an organism.

Ways to Teach It
Pour water over trays of bare soil and grass-covered soil, then compare erosion and where the soil collects.
Show two forest photos, one before and one after a fire, and ask students to write three cause-and-effect statements.
Give teams event, habitat, and effect cards to match, then require an oral explanation for each match.
Read a local report about flooding or erosion, then mark the affected plants, animals, soil, and water on a simple map.
