What Students Need to Do
- Students identify an environmental change and explain how an organism responds. They sort responses by daily, seasonal, or long-term time scales and connect each response to survival.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the environmental cue, describe the organism’s response, and classify its time scale. They can predict a likely response when conditions change and support it with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think individual organisms develop inherited adaptations during their lifetimes. They may also assume seasonal responses depend only on temperature or that every response is a conscious choice.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “A rabbit grows thicker fur before winter. Name the environmental cue, classify the time scale, and explain how the response helps.”
