What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe the same plant, animal, object, or material at different times. They describe what changed using pictures or direct observations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare before and after observations and name a visible change, such as a sprout growing or ice melting. The student knows that change alone does not make something alive.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only living things change, or that anything that moves or changes is alive. They may confuse melting, breaking, or wearing down with growth.
How to Assess It
- Show paired pictures of a seed and sprout, then an ice cube and puddle. Ask, “What changed in each pair, and which example is alive?”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Place an ice cube on a tray, observe it every five minutes, and draw how its shape and size change.
Show photos of a puppy and adult dog, then ask, “What changed, and what stayed the same?”
Play a matching game with picture cards showing plants, animals, and objects before and after a change.
Photograph one playground plant and one playground object, then compare new photos next week and name any changes.
