What Students Need to Do: Students compare the same object at two different times and describe what changed. They examine examples from nature and objects made by people.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sequence before and after pictures. They name visible evidence, such as growth, fading, rust, cracks, or wear.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only living things change or that people cause every change. They may also assume all changes happen quickly or can be reversed.
How to Assess It: Show before and after pictures of a tree and a playground bench. Ask, “What changed in each pair, and what evidence do you see?”

Lesson moves

Place a leaf and a paper strip in a sunny window, then sketch and compare them each day for one week.
Show pictures of a new and faded sign, then ask students to explain what changed and how they know.
Have students match and sequence picture cards showing a growing plant, a rusting bicycle, and a cracking sidewalk.
Walk around the school grounds and photograph faded paint, worn steps, growing plants, and cracked pavement for a class change chart.
