What Students Need to Do: Students observe how weather, plants, animals, and daylight change across the year. They identify seasons from visible clues and place them in a repeating order.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students name the season shown in a picture and point to evidence such as bare trees, flowers, or snow. They put the seasons in order and explain that the pattern repeats.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think one cold day means winter or one hot day means summer. They may believe every place has snow in winter or that seasons happen in a random order.
How to Assess It: Give students four seasonal picture cards and ask them to place the cards in order, then name one clue for each season.

Lesson moves

Sort pictures of trees, clothing, and weather into four labeled hoops, then have students explain one choice.
Ask, “What changes do you notice outside from one season to the next?” and record student observations on a chart.
Play a season clue game where students match clues such as falling leaves, new flowers, or icy sidewalks to a season.
Compare a current playground photo with photos taken in other seasons, then circle changes in plants, clothing, and weather.
