What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how people and natural events change air, water, soil, and living spaces. They explain why water and soil must be protected and suggest practical conservation steps.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can trace a cause, such as clearing plants, to effects like erosion, muddy water, and habitat loss. They can choose a reasonable action to reduce damage or conserve resources.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the water cycle makes usable water unlimited or that soil quickly replaces itself. They may assume fires and floods only cause harm, or that human actions affect only the immediate area.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A park has bare soil beside a stream. Name two likely effects and one action that could protect the ecosystem.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pour equal amounts of water over trays of bare soil and grass-covered soil, then compare runoff and soil loss.

  2. Write a claim explaining how a flood or fire can harm an ecosystem and also create conditions for new growth.

  3. Sort scenario cards by air, water, habitat, or soil impact, then match each harmful action with a conservation choice.

  4. Audit classroom water use for one day, record wasted water, and propose one change the class can test.
