What Students Need to Do: Students explain why the amount of usable fresh water is small. They identify daily choices that waste water and describe practical ways to use less.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name several ways people use water and explain which actions conserve it. The student can support each choice with a clear reason.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Earth has unlimited usable water because oceans cover much of the planet. They may also think conservation only matters during droughts or that one person’s actions make no difference.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit ticket: “Name one way water is wasted at home or school, then explain one change that would conserve it.”

Lesson moves

Measure water from two brushing models, one with a simulated running tap and one with the tap turned off.
Write a response to: “Which water-saving habit should our class adopt, and how would it reduce waste?”
Play a card sort where teams place household actions under “conserves water” or “wastes water,” then defend two choices.
Conduct a classroom sink audit, record leaks or wasteful habits, and write one recommendation for the custodian or principal.
