What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify things people get from Earth, such as water, soil, wood, rocks, and fuels. They explain that these supplies are not endless and can run low.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name several resources from Earth and explain how people use them. Given an example, the student can tell why wasting a resource leaves less for later.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think nature replaces every resource right away. They may also think only water can run low, or that anything found in a store is unlimited.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a dripping faucet and ask, “Why could this be a problem?” Have students draw or write one way to save water.

Ways to Teach It
Give each group 15 counters as a water supply; students remove counters for daily uses and observe that the supply shrinks.
Ask, “A town has one pond. What could happen if everyone wastes water?” Students draw and label their answer.
Play Resource Match with cards showing water, wood, soil, rocks, and fuels paired with ways people use them.
Walk around the school to find water, paper, wood, and soil, then record one way each resource is being used.
