What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify choices that use, waste, or save water, trees, soil, and other resources. They explain how people can help keep resources available.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort examples such as leaving water running, recycling paper, and planting trees. They can tell how each action changes what remains for later use.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think natural resources never run out or are quickly replaced. They may also believe one person's choices cannot make a difference.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a dripping faucet, a child reusing paper, and a cut tree. Ask students to circle helpful actions and explain one choice.

Give groups a small cup of water for classroom tasks, then discuss why they must plan how to use the limited amount.
Ask students to draw one way their family uses a natural resource and write how they could use less.
