What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort familiar items by whether they can be used again, recycled, or thrown away. They explain how choices can help or harm nature.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly sort common items and give a simple reason for each choice. They can name one action that protects air, water, land, or animals.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think reusing and recycling mean the same thing, or that every item can go in a recycling bin. They may also think litter disappears on its own.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a jar, paper, and litter beside a stream. Ask students to choose what to reuse or recycle and explain one possible harm.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups clean classroom items to sort into use again, recycle, and trash bins, then explain one choice.
Ask, "How could litter near our playground affect animals?" Have students draw the result and dictate or write one sentence.
Play a picture-card relay where students place each object under reuse, recycle, or trash and earn a point for a correct reason.
Examine waste from a class snack and choose one disposable item that could be replaced with a reusable item next time.
