What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify natural resources, such as water, trees, soil, and rocks. They explain that supplies can run low and choose actions that save resources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can tell whether an action saves or wastes a resource and explain why. They can sort examples as reducing, reusing, or recycling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think water, trees, and other resources cannot run out. They may confuse reusing an item with recycling it or think recycling removes all waste.
How to Assess It
- Show three choices: turning off a faucet, using the blank side of paper, and recycling a can. Ask students to name how each choice saves resources.

Ways to Teach It
Set out a bottle, paper, jar, and box, then have students match reduce, reuse, and recycle action cards to each item.
Ask, “What might happen if everyone left the faucet running while brushing?” Students draw and write one water-saving choice.
Play Resource Rescue: teams place action cards under saves resources or wastes resources, then explain each choice.
Walk through the school to spot lights, faucets, paper bins, and reusable supplies, then make one class conservation plan.
