What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways to use fewer materials, use items again, and sort items for recycling. They explain how these choices save resources and reduce trash.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sort familiar actions into reduce, reuse, or recycle. They can name one classroom example and explain what resource it saves.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every used item can go in a recycling bin. They may confuse reusing an object with turning it into a new material.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a student using both sides of paper. Ask students to name the action and explain how it saves a resource.

Lesson moves

Give pairs clean classroom items to place on labeled reduce, reuse, or recycle mats.
Ask students to draw and label one way the class could make less trash tomorrow.
Read scenario cards aloud, then have students move to reduce, reuse, or recycle signs.
Conduct a lunch trash check, then choose one change that would reduce tomorrow’s waste.
