What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify objects that can be cleaned and used again. They describe another way to use an object instead of throwing it away.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort familiar objects by whether they can be used again. The student can name a safe, practical second use for an object.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think reusing and recycling mean the same thing. They may also think every used item is trash, or that unsafe items should be reused.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a glass jar, a cloth bag, and a used tissue. Ask students to circle two reusable items and tell how each could be used again.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a clean jar, box, and paper tube, then have them choose one and turn it into a useful classroom object.
Ask, “What is something your family uses many times?” and have students draw the object and explain its repeated use.
Play a sorting game with object cards, placing each card under “use again” or “throw away” and explaining each choice.
Inspect lunch containers and utensils, then list items that can return home, be washed, and come back for another lunch.
