Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify everyday actions that help or harm nature. They explain a simple result for air, water, soil, plants, animals, or people.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a picture or short scenario, students can label the choice as helpful or harmful and say why. They can suggest a safer choice, such as using a trash can or saving water.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think litter is gone once it is out of sight or that one person cannot make a difference. They may also think every item can go into a recycling bin.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of someone leaving trash beside a stream. Ask, “What could happen, and what should the person do instead?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards to sort into “helps nature” and “harms nature,” then have them explain one choice.
Ask students to draw and label one choice they can make to protect plants or animals near school.
Play Nature Choice Charades, where students act out an action and classmates identify whether it helps or harms.
Take a schoolyard walk, find one environmental problem, and complete one class action such as collecting litter or turning off an outdoor faucet.
