What Students Need to Do: Students name ways people, plants, and animals depend on water. They connect water to tasks such as drinking, cooking, washing, and growing plants.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can give several examples of how water is used. The student can explain who or what needs the water in each example.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think water is only for drinking or bathing. They may also think all water is safe to drink or that plants do not need water.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw two different ways water is used and explain each drawing aloud. Listen for two clear, accurate examples.

Lesson moves

Set up stations where students use small amounts of water to wash a toy, water a plant, and paint with a brush.
Ask, “How did you use water before coming to school today?” and record student answers on a class chart.
Play water-use charades, with students acting out cooking, cleaning, drinking, watering plants, or putting out a fire.
Walk around the school to find sinks, fountains, gardens, and cleaning supplies, then discuss how water is used at each place.
