What Students Need to Do: Students explain how water supports crop irrigation, electricity production, drinking supplies, sanitation, and disease prevention. They describe what can happen when water is scarce or polluted.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect each water use to a clear process, such as cooling equipment at a power plant or washing hands to limit disease. They can compare competing needs during a drought.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think power plants use water only when dams generate electricity, overlooking water used for cooling. They may also confuse clean water access with water quantity alone.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “A town loses half its reservoir water. Name one likely effect on farms, electricity production, and community health.”

Lesson moves

Give groups 20 cups of water to allocate among farms, a power plant, and homes, then remove eight cups for a drought simulation.
Discuss or write: During a severe drought, which water use should receive priority, and what evidence supports your decision?
Play a card-matching race using water-use cards, process cards, and consequence cards for agriculture, electricity, sanitation, and drinking water.
Use a local watershed map to trace water from its source to homes, farms, and any nearby power facilities.
