What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe water as a liquid, ice, and water in the air. They identify where water is found, explain common uses, and observe which way it flows.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name several places people find and use water. They recognize ice as frozen water and predict that water will move down a sloped surface.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think ice is not water or that visible mist is smoke. They may also think water comes only from faucets or flows in any direction.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of ice, rain, a faucet, a puddle, and water on a ramp. Ask students to identify the water, name one use, and point where the ramp water will flow.

Ways to Teach It
Place drops of water on trays tilted at different angles, then have students trace each drop's path with a finger.
Ask, "Where did you see or use water today?" and record student answers under place and use.
Play a picture sort using cards that show water forms, water locations, water uses, and objects unrelated to water.
Walk around the school grounds after rain, find puddles and drains, and predict where the water will move.
