What Students Need to Do: Students identify places where water is present, such as ponds, clouds, puddles, sinks, and drinking fountains. They sort examples into outdoor and indoor locations.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name several different locations that contain water. The student can identify water in photos, even when it is not in a cup.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think water is found only in oceans, lakes, or cups. They may not recognize water in clouds, rain, puddles, sinks, or living things.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a cloud, pond, rock, sink, and chair. Ask students to circle each picture where water may be present and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Take a water walk around the school and mark each sink, fountain, puddle, or drain on a simple picture map.
Ask, "Where did you see or use water before school today?" Record student answers on a class chart.
Play Water Spot: show picture cards, and students hold up a blue card when water is present.
Track one day's water use by drawing each place where students drink, wash, cook, or clean with water.
