What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a testable question into a clear procedure they can follow alone or with a team. They identify changed and measured variables, constants, and a control when needed. They use tools safely, take metric and microscope measurements, and judge whether the collection method gives accurate data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can plan a fair, repeatable investigation and explain each variable and comparison. Their data table includes metric units, multiple trials, and microscope observations when appropriate. They can spot weaknesses in a method and suggest a specific correction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse a control group with a constant, or think every investigation needs a control group. They may confuse accuracy with precision and assume digital tools are always more accurate. They may record microscope magnification as specimen size, omit units, or change several variables at once.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Students are testing whether light color affects Elodea oxygen production; identify the changed and measured variables, three constants, a control, one metric tool, and one safety step. State one way to check the accuracy of the data.
