What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations, measurements, or models to explain results and defend a claim. They explain how a science idea supports a design, then compare possible solutions using goals and limits.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a problem, students propose more than one solution and check each against the stated criteria and constraints. They choose the strongest option, cite relevant evidence, explain trade-offs, and identify weak reasoning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a favorite solution without checking the evidence or limits. They may confuse criteria with constraints, treat all data as equally useful, or criticize a person instead of the reasoning.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A cup sleeve must limit heat loss to 5°C, cost under $2, and contain no plastic. Felt loses 4°C and costs $1.50, foam loses 2°C and costs $1 but contains plastic, and cotton loses 6°C and costs $0.75; choose the best option, cite two facts, explain how insulation helps, and state why another option fails.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two index-card bridges using 30 cm of tape, test each with pennies, and rank them against strength and material limits.

  2. Prompt: Two identical plants grew 8 cm in sunlight and 3 cm in shade; defend an explanation, then challenge one unsupported claim.

  3. Run a criteria and constraints card sort using playground designs, budget limits, safety rules, and space requirements, then explain which designs fail.

  4. Compare three reusable bottle designs using price, leak-test results, and capacity, then recommend one for a class field trip.
