What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use measurements, observations, and patterns to explain investigation results. They check whether conclusions match the evidence. They compare solutions and connect science ideas to design choices.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student makes a clear claim, cites relevant evidence, and explains how the evidence supports the claim. The student compares designs fairly and identifies why one solution works better.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give an opinion instead of citing a measurement or observation. They may choose the first successful design without comparing results. Some describe a design feature but do not explain the science behind it.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A flat paper bridge held 8 cubes, and a folded bridge held 21. Critique the claim that the flat bridge is stronger, then explain which design is better and why.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two foil boats, count how many washers each holds, and use the results to recommend one design change.

  2. Discuss this prompt: Which evidence best proves that a folded paper bridge is stronger than a flat bridge?

  3. Play a card-matching game that pairs claims about plant growth with measurements, observations, and patterns that support or challenge each claim.

  4. Compare insulated lunch bags and paper bags, then explain how material properties help keep food cool.
