What Students Need to Do: Students identify what a successful solution must do and the limits on time, cost, materials, or size. They create multiple solutions, compare them against those requirements, and use evidence to explain which works best.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can sketch or describe at least two workable solutions and score each one against stated criteria and constraints. The student uses test results to defend a choice and suggest an improvement.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a favorite design without checking evidence or consider only one possible solution. They may confuse criteria with constraints, ignore tradeoffs, or claim a design works even when it exceeds a limit.
How to Assess It: List three watering tools: A reaches 3 meters and costs $15, B reaches 2 meters and costs $4, and C reaches 1 meter and costs $8. Ask students to choose one when the reach must be 2 meters and the cost must stay under $10, then justify it.

Lesson moves
