What Students Need to Do: Students propose at least two workable designs for the same problem. They identify what success means and the limits on materials, time, cost, or size. They compare each design with evidence and question weak recommendations.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a design challenge, a student creates several distinct options rather than small cosmetic changes. The student records how each option performs in a score table and identifies tradeoffs. The final choice is supported by test results, not personal preference.
Common Misconceptions: Students often choose a favorite before testing, then ignore evidence that challenges it. They may confuse a goal, such as keeping water cold, with a limit, such as spending under $10. Some compare designs using different measures or assume one strong result makes a design the best overall.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Design two lunchbox liners that keep an ice cube solid for 20 minutes using only paper, foil, and tape. Compare them in a table, then choose one and explain why.

Lesson moves

Give teams 40 straws and 60 centimeters of tape to build two towers, then score height, stability, and material use.
Show two playground designs and ask students to recommend one using safety, cost, space, and accessibility evidence.
