What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather science information from grade-level texts, diagrams, videos, and other suitable sources. They identify the main idea, judge whether a source is trustworthy, and explain findings or design ideas clearly to others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can summarize a source accurately without copying whole sections. The student can name evidence from the source, explain why it is reliable, and present a clear scientific idea or solution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every website or video is reliable. They may copy facts without explaining what they mean, leave out evidence, or present opinions as scientific conclusions.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short science article with a labeled diagram. Ask them to write the main idea, list one supporting detail, explain why the source is trustworthy, and share a two-sentence summary.

Ways to Teach It
Set up source stations with books, websites, diagrams, and videos, then have pairs sort them by reliability and explain each choice.
Ask students to write: How can you tell whether a science source should be trusted?
Play Summary Relay, where teams read short passages and earn points for accurate main ideas, evidence, and clear wording.
Have students compare two weather reports, choose the more reliable one, and explain which evidence would help plan an outdoor event.
