What Students Need to Do

Students observe objects or events and record what they notice. They show findings with a simple graph, labeled picture, drawing, numbers, spoken explanation, or short written statement.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students make a representation that matches their observations or counts. They label key parts and explain one accurate finding, such as which group has more or what changed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may draw what they expected instead of what they observed. They may use unequal picture symbols, leave out labels, copy counts incorrectly, or make a claim the data do not support.

How to Assess It

Give students counts for red, blue, and green cubes. Ask them to make a picture graph and write or say one fact shown by it.

   Students sort a cup of buttons by color, count each group, make a picture graph, and share one observation.

   Ask, “Which graph or drawing best shows our weather observations, and what evidence supports your choice?”

   Play Graph Match: students pair data cards with the correct picture graph, then explain each match to a partner.

   Track class lunch choices, graph the totals, and write one sentence the cafeteria staff could use.
