What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather facts from grade-level science books, articles, diagrams, and videos. They decide which information is supported and explain their findings, designs, or solutions clearly to others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify a source's main idea and use details from it as evidence. They can share accurate information through clear speech, writing, diagrams, or labeled models and answer questions about it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy every detail, treat opinions as facts, or trust the first website they find. They may also share unlabeled drawings or conclusions without explaining the evidence behind them.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short science paragraph and labeled diagram. Ask them to write two supported facts, name the source for each, and explain one fact to a partner.

Ways to Teach It
At a rock station, students use a child-friendly field guide to identify samples, record evidence, and explain one identification.
Show an official weather forecast and an unsigned weather post; ask, "Which should we trust, and what clues support your choice?"
Play Source Detective with cards showing a museum webpage, textbook, product ad, and anonymous post; teams sort them and explain each choice.
Students read seed packet instructions and an extension service planting guide, then write a recommendation for the school garden.
