What Students Need to Do: Students read short science texts or view age-appropriate media. They identify key facts, decide whether the source is trustworthy, and explain the information clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students state the main idea and supporting details from a science source. They can name the source, explain why it is reliable, and share an accurate summary.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every website, video, or social media post as reliable. They may copy sentences without understanding them or confuse an interesting detail with the main idea.
How to Assess It: Give students a short science article and ask: “What is the main idea, what fact supports it, and why should we trust this source?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs printed source cards from museums, blogs, agencies, and advertisements to sort into reliable, questionable, or needs more checking.
Read two short animal articles, then write which source is more trustworthy and cite two clues from the texts.
