What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level science texts and examine diagrams, videos, or other media. They identify the main idea, gather relevant details, and explain the information accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can summarize a science source without copying whole sections. The student can use specific details from the source and explain why the information is trustworthy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every website or video as reliable. They may copy sentences instead of summarizing, confuse interesting facts with relevant details, or overlook information in captions and diagrams.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short science article with a diagram. Ask them to state the main idea, list two supporting details, and name one sign that the source is reliable.

Give pairs source cards, sticky notes, and a question; have them mark relevant facts and place each note beside supporting text or images.
Ask students to write: Which source best explains erosion, and what two details support your choice?
