What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather science information from grade-level articles, diagrams, videos, and trusted websites. They identify the main idea, find supporting evidence, and explain the information accurately in their own words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can summarize a science source without copying and point to details that support the summary. The student can judge a source using its author, evidence, date, and publisher.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the first search result as reliable, confuse opinions with evidence, or copy sentences instead of showing understanding. They may overlook captions, diagrams, dates, or the source’s author.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short science article with a diagram. Ask them to state the main idea, cite two supporting details, and name one sign that the source is trustworthy.

Ways to Teach It
Set out a science article, infographic, and labeled model, then have pairs record three matching facts on sticky notes.
Ask, “Which source would you trust for facts about erosion, and what evidence supports your choice?”
Play Source Detective with website cards, awarding points when teams identify the author, date, evidence, and publisher.
Have students compare a weather app forecast with a local meteorologist’s report and explain which source they would use to plan recess.
