Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students describe an investigation, design idea, or solution using clear words, labeled drawings, tables, or models. They include observations and evidence so others can understand their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students explain what they did, what happened, and what the evidence shows. They answer questions, use accurate science words, and revise unclear parts of their explanation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give an opinion without evidence or list results without explaining what they mean. They may leave labels off diagrams, omit units, or assume the audience already knows the procedure.
How to Assess It: Give students a simple results table and ask: “What happened, and what evidence from the table supports your answer?” Require two complete sentences and one data value.

Lesson moves

Teams build foil boats, test how many pennies each holds, then share a labeled drawing and one result with another team.
Ask students to write: “Which design worked best, and what observation or measurement supports your answer?”
Play Evidence Match by having students pair conclusion cards with the observation, measurement, diagram, or table that supports each conclusion.
Students compare two playground shade plans and present a recommendation to the principal using temperature data and a labeled site sketch.
