Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students organize observations, evidence, and design choices so another person can understand their work. They use labeled diagrams, tables, graphs, writing, or speaking to explain results and answer questions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give an accurate explanation of an investigation or design solution. They include relevant evidence, clear labels and units, and enough detail for someone else to follow their reasoning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list data without explaining how it supports a conclusion. They may omit labels or units, present opinions as evidence, or assume the audience already knows the procedure.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Plant A grew 3 cm and Plant B grew 7 cm. Write a conclusion and draw one labeled visual that clearly shows the result.”

Lesson moves

Build a foil boat, test how many pennies it holds, then create a labeled sketch and directions for another group.
Write four sentences answering: “Which evidence best supports your group’s conclusion, and how would you explain it to a younger student?”
Play Science Message Relay: one team graphs a data table, and another team writes the conclusion and checks the graph for accuracy.
Use cafeteria waste data to create a one slide recommendation for the principal that includes a graph and supporting evidence.
