Students record what they notice and the data they collect. They present their findings with a clear graph, labeled drawing, numbers, spoken explanation, or short written statement.

Students turn a set of observations into an accurate graph or labeled drawing. They explain what the information shows and support their answer with a number or specific detail.

Common Misconceptions

Students may draw decorative pictures instead of accurate records. They may leave graphs unlabeled, count incorrectly, report guesses as observations, or think they must use every format.

How to Assess It

Give students this data: 4 red leaves, 2 yellow leaves, and 3 brown leaves. Ask them to make a graph and write one sentence explaining the results.

   Have students sort classroom buttons by color, count each group, and create a labeled picture graph.

   Show two weather charts and ask, "Which one communicates the results more clearly, and why?"

   Partners draw colored cubes from a bag, keep tally marks, then race to build an accurate graph.
