What Students Need to Do: Students explain that sunlight brightens and heats the land, water, and air. They observe where the Sun appears in the morning, at midday, and later in the day.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain why sunny materials become warmer than shaded materials. They can sequence pictures showing the Sun low, higher, then low again across the daytime sky.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the Sun stays in one place or completely disappears at night. They may confuse its changing location with a change in its size.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Complete, “Earth gets light and warmth from the _____.” Then draw the Sun’s location during morning, midday, and late afternoon.

Lesson moves

Place cups of soil and water under a lamp and in shade, then compare temperatures after 15 minutes.
Students write: Where does the Sun appear in the morning, at midday, and later, and what changes do you notice?
Give pairs morning, midday, and late-afternoon sky cards to sequence, then have them explain their order.
Walk the playground to find sunny and shaded spots, then choose where a wet towel would dry faster and explain why.
