What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use what they see or measure to say what happened. They also spot a result that does not fit the rest and explain why it seems unusual.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can study a simple picture, tally chart, or set of measurements and give a matching conclusion. The student can point out an unexpected result without ignoring or changing it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may make a conclusion from a guess instead of the evidence. They may think every result must match, or erase an unusual result because they believe it is wrong.
How to Assess It
- Show plant heights of 4, 5, 4, and 9 centimeters. Ask, “What can you conclude, and which result should we check again?”

Ways to Teach It
Test four classroom objects with a ramp, record how far each rolls, then identify the result that does not fit.
Show a picture of three wilted plants and one healthy plant, then ask students to write one evidence-based conclusion.
Play Odd Result Out with sets of picture cards, and have partners explain which observation is unexpected and why.
Compare daily playground temperatures for one week, then discuss what clothing fits the pattern and which day was unusual.
