What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe an investigation, object, or simple picture graph and say what the results show. They connect their conclusion to something they saw, measured, or counted.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states an accurate result and names the observation that supports it. The student can tell the difference between a conclusion and a guess.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat the steps instead of telling what the results mean. They may give a prediction, personal opinion, or broad claim that the observations do not support.

How to Assess It

Show a picture chart of three seeds grown in sunlight and three grown in darkness. Ask, “Where did the seeds grow taller, and what evidence supports your answer?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place one ice cube in sunlight and one in shade, then have students observe both and state which melted faster.

  2. Ask, “Which paper towel absorbed more water, and what did you observe that supports your answer?”

  3. Play Evidence Match: students pair picture cards showing results with conclusion cards, then explain each match.

  4. Track playground puddles with daily drawings, then conclude what happens to puddles after several dry days.
