What Students Need to Do

Students observe an event or look at a simple picture graph, tally chart, or set of results. They state what the evidence shows without adding unsupported guesses.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a conclusion that matches the recorded results or observations. The student can point to a picture, count, or observed change that supports the conclusion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give a guess or personal opinion instead of using the evidence. They may repeat one observation without saying what it shows. They may also claim something always happens after seeing it happen once.

How to Assess It

Show a picture chart where three seeds in sunlight sprouted and three seeds in darkness did not. Ask, “What conclusion can you make from these results?”
