What Students Need to Do: Students examine a small set of observations or results and tell what those results show. They support their conclusion with a specific detail from the evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a picture, table, or class investigation, a student states a reasonable conclusion. The student points to matching evidence and revises a claim when the evidence does not support it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may repeat what happened without saying what it means. They may choose a conclusion based on a guess instead of the recorded results. Some treat one observation as proof when the other data differs.
How to Assess It: Give students these results: ice in sunlight melted in 12 minutes, while ice in shade melted in 25 minutes. Ask, “What can you conclude, and which result supports it?”

Lesson moves

Test two paper towel brands with equal amounts of water, record how much each absorbs, then write one conclusion supported by the results.
Show three observations from a seed investigation and ask, “What do these observations tell us about what seeds need?”
Give pairs conclusion cards and evidence cards, then have them match each conclusion to the evidence that supports it.
Use a five day weather chart to decide which day was warmest and explain the choice using recorded temperatures.
