What Students Need to Do

Students compare an observation with what they expected to happen. They point out a result that does not fit the pattern and describe it without changing or ignoring it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify the result that is different from the others. The student can explain why it seems unexpected and suggest checking the test again.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every result must match their prediction. They may ignore an odd result, change recorded data, or call any surprising event a mistake without checking.

How to Assess It

Show this result set: three ice cubes melted in 20 minutes, but one melted in 5 minutes. Ask, “Which result is unexpected, and what should we do next?”

  1. Test four paper airplanes made from the same pattern, record each flight distance, and circle any result that differs greatly.

  2. Ask students to finish the prompt, “I expected ___, but I observed ___, so I would check ___.”

  3. Play Odd Result Out by showing four picture results and having partners identify and explain the unexpected one.

  4. Compare daily temperatures for one week and discuss any day that is much warmer or cooler than the others.
