Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
5.PS.2 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 5.PS.2.a
Describe mean as fair share.
- 5.PS.2.b
Describe and determine the mean of a set of data values representing data from a given context as a measure of center.
- 5.PS.2.c
Describe and determine the median of a set of data values representing data from a given context as a measure of center.
- 5.PS.2.d
Describe and determine the mode of a set of data values representing data from a given context as a measure of center.
- 5.PS.2.e
Describe and determine the range of a set of data values representing data from a given context as a measure of spread.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate the mean, median, mode, and range for data from a real situation. They explain the mean as the amount each group receives when a total is shared equally. They use the measures to describe the center and spread of the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly calculates all four measures and labels each answer using the context. They recognize when data have no mode or more than one mode. They explain what each result says about the data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may find the median without ordering values or divide the sum by the wrong number when finding the mean. They may treat the mode as the greatest value or assume every set has one mode. They may report the greatest value as the range instead of subtracting the least value from the greatest.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Five students read 12, 8, 10, 10, and 15 pages. Find the mean, median, mode, and range, then explain the mean as an equal share.

Ways to Teach It
Use cubes to model five data values, combine all cubes, then redistribute them equally to show the mean as an equal share.
Ask students to write which measure best describes class reading totals and explain why they chose mean, median, mode, or range.
Play Measure Match by pairing data-set cards with mean, median, mode, and range cards, then checking each match with a partner.
Compare daily temperatures for two weeks and decide which week was warmer and which had more variation.
