The Standard

Describe and determine the range of a set of data values representing data from a given context as a measure of spread.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will solve contextual problems using measures of center and the range.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the least and greatest values in a contextual data set, then subtract to find the range. They explain what that distance shows about the data.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly subtract the least value from the greatest value. They state the answer with units and explain how far the data values spread.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name the least and greatest values instead of subtracting them. They may confuse range with the number of values or forget to include units.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Plant heights are 12, 15, 11, 18, and 14 centimeters. Find the range and explain what it shows about the heights.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students toss a paper airplane five times, measure each distance, then find and label the range in centimeters.

  2. Ask students to explain how two data sets can have the same range but different values, using their own examples.

  3. Pairs draw five number cards, calculate the range, and earn a point when both partners agree and justify the calculation.

  4. Give students one week of daily temperatures and have them find what the range shows about temperature changes.
