What Students Need to Do

Students explain how Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation work, progressive reforms, military role, canal policy, and foreign policy changed the nation. They connect the causes and results of the Spanish-American War and World War I to changes in warfare and United States power. They also explain how postwar sanctions and the League of Nations’ failure helped set conditions for World War II.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can place key events in order and build accurate cause-and-effect chains across both wars. They can use a map or short source to explain Roosevelt’s choices, wartime technology, expanding United States influence, and weaknesses in the postwar settlement.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse the Monroe Doctrine with the Roosevelt Corollary and place Roosevelt’s cavalry service in World War I. They may treat one event as the sole cause of World War I or assume new weapons quickly ended trench warfare. Many also think the United States joined the League of Nations or that the peace settlement created lasting stability.
