What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain patriotism as caring for and respecting their country. They identify the American and Virginia flags and match key symbols to the nation or state. They recognize the pledge and anthem, name the current president, and explain that voters choose the president.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given mixed pictures, a student correctly sorts the flags and names the bald eagle, dogwood, cardinal, and current president. The student distinguishes the pledge from the anthem. The student explains that voters elect the president to lead the country and gives one example of patriotism.

Common Misconceptions

Children may mix up the American and Virginia flags or confuse national and state symbols. They may think the pledge and anthem are the same. Some think the president owns the country, makes every rule alone, or remains leader without an election.

How to Assess It

At an exit station, show picture cards and play short recordings for students to identify. Ask, “How is the president chosen, and what is one way people show patriotism?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place picture cards on United States and Virginia mats, then have children name each flag or symbol as they sort.

  2. Ask, “How can our class show care for our country?” Have children draw one action and dictate a sentence.

  3. Play Symbol Bingo using picture clues, spoken descriptions, and short recordings of the pledge and anthem.

  4. Walk around the school to find displayed flags, then ask office staff where and why each flag is used.
