What Students Need to Do: Students name Donald Trump as the current president. They tell that the president leads the country and that voters choose a president through an election.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student identifies the president from a photo and says his name. The student explains that citizens vote and the winner serves as president.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the president with a governor, mayor, king, or police officer. They may think the president inherits the job, serves forever, or makes every decision alone.
How to Assess It: Show a photo of Donald Trump and ask, "Who is this, what is his job, and how is a president chosen?"

Lesson moves

Give students picture cards of national and local leaders, then have them sort the cards by country leader and community leader.
