What Students Need to Do

Students locate Rome, Italy, and the Mediterranean Sea on a world map. They use geographic features to explain Roman farming and trade. They explain elected representation and identify Roman art, engineering, architecture, and modern influences.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can label Rome, Italy, and the Mediterranean Sea and explain how nearby land and water supported the economy. The student explains that eligible citizens chose officials to act for them. The student connects roads, aqueducts, mosaics, arches, and domes to their uses and later examples.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat Rome as only a city rather than the center of a larger republic and empire. They may assume every resident could vote or that all people had equal political power. They may confuse aqueducts with roads or label every building with columns as Roman.
