3.4 is a Standards of Learning history and social science standard. These are the skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students locate ancient Egypt in northeastern Africa and explain how the Nile supported farming, travel, and trade. They describe the pharaoh’s role, Egyptian writing and inventions, and major structures such as pyramids and obelisks.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can label Egypt and the Nile on a world map and connect the river to food, jobs, and settlement. The student can explain pharaoh-led government and give accurate examples of Egyptian arts, inventions, architecture, and modern influence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the Nile flows south or that Egypt is in Europe. They may also think pyramids were homes, every Egyptian was a pharaoh, or desert land made farming impossible everywhere.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank map and ask them to mark Egypt and the Nile. Then have them write one geography and economy connection and explain one Egyptian influence seen today.

   Use sand, water, and paper figures to model Nile flooding, then place farms and towns where people could grow food and travel.

   Write a response to this prompt: How would life in ancient Egypt change if the Nile dried up?
