What Students Need to Do: Students find Europe, identify the Italian peninsula, and mark Rome in present-day Italy. They describe its location using the Mediterranean Sea and nearby countries.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can place a dot near the correct location of Rome on an unlabeled world map. The student can explain that Rome is a city in Italy, which is part of Europe.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call Rome a country or place it in Greece. They may also shade the entire Roman Empire when asked to mark the city of Rome.
How to Assess It: Give students an unlabeled world map and ask them to circle Europe, mark Rome, and complete: Rome is in present-day ___ near the ___ Sea.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a world map, a Europe map, and a Rome label, then have them place the label and explain their choice.
Ask students to write two location clues that would help a classmate find Rome without naming it.
Run a map relay where teams locate Europe, Italy, the Mediterranean Sea, and Rome in order.
Trace a flight from Virginia to Rome on a globe, naming the ocean crossed and the continent reached.
