What Students Need to Do: Students find Greece on a world map and identify it as part of southeastern Europe. They use nearby features, including the Mediterranean Sea, to describe its location.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can point to Greece on labeled and unlabeled world maps. The student can name Europe and the Mediterranean Sea as location clues.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse Greece with Italy or Egypt because all three are near the Mediterranean Sea. They may also expect ancient Greece to have the same borders as modern Greece.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank world map and ask them to circle Greece, label Europe, and mark the Mediterranean Sea.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a world map and a small clay marker to place on Greece, then check its position using an atlas.
Ask students to write two location clues that would help a classmate find Greece without naming it.
Play a map relay where teams locate Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, and Greece in that order.
Use a flight map to trace a trip from Virginia to Athens, naming the ocean crossed and the destination continent.
